Locanda Il Gatto Rosso, an Italian restaurant in the picturesque village of Villaverde - Fuerteventura, has gone through an extraordinary renovation and we are excited to show you the result. We transformed an unremarkable space that lacked style and personality into a new, trendy and elegant place with a signature design identity. Modern, urban and cosmopolitan city vibes are some of the ingredients that inspired the recipe of our interior design project. By adding a pinch of rustic charm and a sprinkle of vibrant contrasts, we created a new and exciting restaurant that preserves the warmth and charm of a traditional Italian locanda.

When Giovanni, the Neapolitan owner and chef at Locanda Il Gatto Rosso, shared his vision of creating a unique culinary experience for his guests in Villaverde, he knew that a fresh new image and interior decoration were necessary to complement this vision and make it a reality. However, he wasn’t sure how to bring it to life, so he entrusted us with the restaurant’s renovation, tasking us with reimagining and optimising the space to establish a distinctive and recognisable design style.

What we found was a space with outdated, inconsistent décor and furnishings that lacked character and defining features. Our intervention went beyond design and furniture as, with the need for more seating and additional storage as top priorities, we had to find creative solutions to maximise the space’s functionality. This would facilitate efficient service while ensuring guests felt welcomed and comfortable.

With this in mind, our goal was to redesign the restaurant in a way that seamlessly fused a modern cosmopolitan ambiance with the cozy, welcoming atmosphere that defines a traditional Italian locanda. We envisioned a space where guests could enjoy their meal in a convivial yet urban-chic environment.

If the secret to a successful recipe lies in the perfect balance of ingredients, we approached this design project with the same philosophy. We carefully blended elements from both traditional and contemporary worlds, including elegant black metal accents on chairs and tables, handmade ceramic tiles on the walls, circular wall lights, rustic dark wood, and stylish contrasts between neutral and bold colours. The result is a restaurant design that is fun, enjoyable, and meant to be savoured down to the last detail.

As guests enter the restaurant, they’re immediately drawn into a dynamic, vibrant space that’s both visually captivating and cozy. The new open-plan layout of the main dining area emphasises flow and balance, while the smaller dining room, offering sunset views over the volcanoes, windmills and the Malpais de la Arena, provides privacy and intimacy, making it the perfect space for special gatherings or romantic dinners. Food lovers immediately feel like they’ve stepped into a trendy city restaurant, while still being immersed in the charming atmosphere of the village of Villaverde.

A pleasant sense of intimacy permeates every corner of the restaurant, allowing guests to relax and savour their meal.

The black ceiling, deliberately painted to make a bold decorative statement, adds depth and elevates the restaurant’s overall sophistication.

Custom-designed long benches offer more comfy seats and inviting nooks where guests can unwind and enjoy dinner. The essence of the restaurant is reflected in the balance between the unfinished, rough-textured walls, which add a contemporary edge, and the rustic beauty of the emerald green artisanal tiles throughout the space.

Around the bar area, which features a white quartz countertop and warm wooden accents, layers of elegance and intrigue are woven together through the new furniture and décor. These include square, bistrot-style tables, a round industrial style metal table, rattan lamps and contrasting black teakwood chairs.

We also paid homage to the iconic Italian film Non ci resta che piangere, starring Massimo Troisi and Roberto Benigni, which inspired the name of the restaurant. Black-and-white stills from the film add a nostalgic touch, making the restaurant feel familiar and inviting, despite its contemporary makeover.

The smaller room’s peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by the soft glow of ambient lighting, complemented by whimsical retro-style chairs. Here, bursts of vibrant hues and rich textures come through, notably in the deep green tiles and the plush mustard velvet of the chairs.

The outdoor space offers a chance to embrace the stunning natural surroundings of Villaverde. We thoughtfully reimagined the patio with durable, comfortable outdoor furniture, enabling guests to enjoy the picturesque views of the windmills as they dine.

Locanda Il Gatto Rosso represents a striking fusion of urban modernity and tradition. The vibrant colours, rustic elements, and retro references come together to create a dining destination that exudes warmth, style, and sophistication.

It stands as a testament to how thoughtful interior design can breathe new life, and purpose, into a space, transforming it into an elegant and inviting environment where all five senses can be nourished.
