Industrial Chic Interior Design

The perfect interior design style for a modern and contemporary open space.

It may be because of films and Netflix that Industrial interior design has become a trend very much appreciated by millennials and young generations. Think about a quirky café with mismatched chairs, a New York City loft with its exposed brick walls or a British warehouse conversion and its big open spaces. We are all exposed to this very fascinating interiors and industrial décor style can be achieved easily because it is practical, contemporary and a bit vintage at the same time.

If you love big open spaces and your home in Fuerteventura allows you to play with it, the industrial style is all about big windows, exposed pipes, raw and unfinished materials, metals, bricks and continuous concrete floors. From an architectural point of view, it will be difficult to create this interior design in a modern apartment, as it usually lacks the typical industrial features like original bricks and very high ceilings. However, you can introduce some industrial elements with the home decorations and aim for a mix of urban American style and our contemporary style to get an industrial chic look for your home.

As an #InteriorDesigner I know the importance that balance has in a home renovating project but especially with this style, the most common mistake that people do is to mix industrial style with other trends. This trick may work with other kinds of home design but not with industrial. If you introduce it in the living room, you must have to do so for the rest of your home interiors, bathrooms and bedrooms included. Having a big open space is a prerogative to achieve a true industrial style. Empty spaces serve as areas where you can showcase statement pieces from pieces of art to vintage furniture. Just like in a museum, the purpose is to walk around freely (after all the industrial style originates from the conversion of huge American factories into flats). Think of one large living area with virtually no walls, except for the bathroom, and purposely unfinished touches that create a raw look. Ceiling beams, aged brick walls or concrete walls, pipes and wires exposed with taste… these are all elements you can use as with these imperfections; you will achieve the perfect #IndustrialStyle

It may seem like a cold atmosphere, but hard wood for the floors and furniture will make your industrial home décor warmer and more welcoming. The other main option for the flooring is cement but, once again, you can add touches of colours and warmth with big carpets. Let’s move on to the protagonist of the industrial interior design: metal. This is also one of the interior design must-use material of the year and you should go for home accessories that present it. Think of minimal iron bookcases, a wooden table with metal legs and add an old metal locker near your entrance.

As I have said before, a retro vintage aesthetic perfectly blends within the industrial décor. This is how you can make this apparently rigid and dark home style more personal and cosier. Vintage leather sofas, antique lamps and drawers are displayed with upcycled and recycled pieces of furniture like coffee tables with metal wheels. Yes, the industrial style can also be eco-friendly using the right furniture and decorative pieces. The layout of the house will undoubtedly affect your choices but having a big open space means you can combine all steel kitchens, leather sofas, wooden chairs, bricks, modern art and other home accessories in one place making sure all these looks are not close together.
